Pocket or Bonnel? Find Your Match

From support to comfort, the spring system in your mattress plays a key role in how you sleep. We're breaking down the difference between pocket springs and Bonnell springs.

The right mattress starts with the right spring. Pocket and Bonnell springs each offer a unique kind of comfort and support, and understanding the difference can help you make the best choice for a restful night’s sleep.

1. Design

The Bonnel spring is a more traditional form of support, first created in 1871, with hourglass-shaped spring coils linked together to create a uniform steel spring unit. Pocket springs are a newer form of technology, with individual springs encased in fabric pockets, allowing each springs to move independently and contour to your body. Our signature zoned pocket springs are designed with varying levels of support across different sections of the mattress, offering support and cushioning where needed for optimal spinal alignment.

2. Movement

While the Bonnel spring is a durable unit, its interlinked components allow more movement across the mattress surface, often creating a bouncier sleeping experience. The pocket spring was designed to counteract this, engineered with enhanced motion isolation in mind, offering a peaceful sleep solution that is ideal for partners - the movement on one side is rarely felt by the other.

3. Feel

The Bonnel spring offers a more uniform level of support across the sleeping surface, often providing a firmer surface feel with less adaptation to your body's contours. The Bonnel system caters to the traditional image one may think of when imagining a mattress - bouncy and springy, a feel that is often loved by younger children and teenagers. The pocket spring is flexible, and provides a unique feel that is dependent on the comfort layers it is accompanied by - this system is best suited to those seeking targeted support, and added pressure relief.

Still have questions? No worries! The best way to understand the difference is to experience it yourself - visit our factory showroom, lie down, feel the support, and discover which spring system works best for your sleep.
